While the battle around Bastogne attracted the most media coverage, nevertheless the Battle of Saint-Vith, which particularly concerned the Pays de Salm, was the most decisive. This battle, officially known as the ‘Ardennes Counteroffensive’ but nicknamed the ‘Battle of the Bulge’ due to the shape of the front line after the German break-out, was the biggest and most deadly battle fought by the American army during the Second World War. During that particularly harsh winter, the battle conditions were especially gruelling for the soldiers on both sides, as well as for the civilians.
This trail will enable you to visit the various battle locations in the municipality of Vielsalm. With a total length of 88 km, it can be travelled by car, motorcycle or bicycle.
Due to considerations of time and comfort, we have split it in two.
1st circuit of 48 km: From Poteau to Dairomont via Rochelinval,
2nd circuit of 40 km: From Goronne to Salmchâteau via "Parker's Crossroads".
