Using diaries as a starting point, let's find out how these civilians perceived and recounted the return of the Germans and the fighting that hit the Ardennes between 16 December 1944 and 28 January 1945!

Lidwina MAHIEU is a historian and archivist. She wanted to look at the Ardennes Offensive from the point of view of civilians. To do this, she relied on personal diaries written by people who were involved in the fighting and others who were further away. Drawing on these valuable sources, she will answer the following questions: who were the diarists and how did they experience the return of the Germans to Belgium? What events did the diarists want to remember and evoke in their diaries? What emotions did the Ardennes diarists express, and did they change over the course of the battle? Did people outside the fighting talk about the battle and do they feel any emotions linked to it? The findings are sometimes surprising and unexpected!
